Nutrition Health Article: What is the effect of supplementation of a food mixture rich in essential fatty acids on women with polycystic ovary syndrome?
Research into the dietary management of PCOS is lacking, despite the fact that lifestyle modifications including diet, exercise and weight loss have been shown to be beneficial.
A reduction in weight of as little as 5 per cent of total body weight has been shown to reduce insulin levels, improve menstrual function, reduce testosterone levels and improve symptoms of hirsutism and acne.
With this perspective, the present study was designed to determine the effect of supplementation of a food mixture rich in essential fatty acids on the selected anthropometric and biochemical parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome in the age group of 23 to 35 years for a period of 60 days.
The effect of the supplementation was compared with that of women with polycystic ovary syndrome without supplementation.
Comparing the effect of supplementation of a food mixture rich in essential fatty acids on the various anthropometric and biochemical parameters in the experimental group with that of the control group, it can be inferred that the supplementation has produced a significant reduction in the anthropometric measurements and in the serum luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone levels of the subjects.
